In this unfinished 1911-12 novel, a man named Clesant March rescues Martin Whitby from falling under the wheels of a train. The subsequent relationship ends with an episode at Cambridge and the suicide of Clesant March's brother. Forster abandoned the novel after 80 pages, unable to resolve the events, but the fragment recalls his novel HOWARDS END in the way it opposes two conflicting ways of life, bourgeois conformity and enlightened liberalism.
