As Hallowe'en approaches, strange things are happening in the basement of Uncle Henry's funeral parlor, where he lives with his 10-year-old niece Bridget Ann (nicknamed 'Dragonfly'). Concerned that dark forces are at work, Uncle Henry summons Mothkin, a hunter, to investigate.

Unexpectedly separated from Mothkin, Dragonfly embarks on a series of terrifying adventures on her own. She meets a young werewolf named Silva who hides and protects her from Hain's henchmen. When Hain discovers Dragonfly's whereabouts, he orders Silva's execution and captures the young girl, determined to corrupt and bend her to his will.
But Dragonfly has a mind of her own and escapes through the mysterious underground chambers of Hain's fortress. Dragonfly reunites with Mothkin on a hilltop overlooking a fierce battle between Hain's flying battle cruiser, the 'Jolly Jack' and a segment of the Harvest Moon population Hain is anxious to exterminate. Knowing she and Mothkin and the strange entourage of gypsies they've befriended are also among Hain's targets, the group lays plans to escape from Harvest Moon.
In a desperate flight, the group embarks on a frantic journey on river rafts through underground caverns to the High Dark Shelf, a place where they would be able to return to the outside and the final confrontation with Hain.
