A retired university professor shot himself to death with a handgun. A colleague fascinated by the event indulges in some amateur sleuthing to discover why he did it and what he meant by his cryptic five last words. The colleague has only gossip and anecdote and the dead man's own writings to help him discover the answers. As he works his way through manuscripts and the documents on the dead man's MAC, he gradually uncovers the uncommon character of the man and the plethora of issues that engaged his mind-such as predation, love, clinical depression, ethics, religion, education, secularism, rights, integrity, treatment of animals, suicide, and human arrogance, silliness, and indifference. The novel is an exposition of personal and social values and the fragility of a human mind as it attempts unsuccessfully, ultimately, to compromise, in Hamlet's words, the 'slings and arrows of outrageous fortune' that have plagued it for more than forty years.
