Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814) was a French writer and botanist. He was born in Le Havre and died in Ãragny, Val-d'Oise. In 1795 he was elected to the Institut de France the predecessor of the AcadÃ©mie FranÃ§aise. He is best known for his 1788 novel Paul and Virginia which was written on the eve of the French Revolution. It records the fate of a child of nature corrupted by the false, artificial sentimentality that prevailed at the time among the upper classes of France.
