Description

The final installment in the historical fiction trilogy City of Fire mingles a fictional retelling of Malcolm XÂs experiences in 1943 Harlem with the fortunes of the invented Dove family, last seen in the previous volume, PARADISE ALLEY. After Malcolm Little (as he was then known) rescues Reverend Jonah Dove and his wife from a group of drunken white soldiers on a train to New York, the light-skinned Jonah, haunted by the incident and already suffering from a critical lack of confidence and faith, considers beginning a new life in which he passes for a white man. For his part, Malcolm throws himself into HarlemÂs exuberant nightlife and drifts from job to job, eventually becoming a numbers runner and drug dealer. Meanwhile, racial tensions in Harlem continue to rise, eventually culminating in the Harlem riot of August, 1943.
